As a long-established fujoshi (BL fan) I always find it interesting to see men react to BL, very entertaining. Cause the thing is, while a lot of people nowadays categorize everything that features male-male romance as "BL" (especially coming from Asia), BL is not queer media per se, BL is a genre initially made by (straight) women for (straight) women. There is queer media in Asia by queer people for queer people, but BL is a bit of a special case. Let me elaborate. BL is originally a manga genre that came to be in the 1970s in Japan. At the time, society (?) thought that shoujo manga (comics for girls that usually feature a male-female romance and are created by women) should not show "inappropriate" behavior from women, as to not set "bad examples" for their readers. So the creators of shoujo manga simply replaced their heroines with androgynous looking males to avoid this "problem". Their heroes looked so pretty and delicate that the genre was even called bishounen (pretty boy) manga for a while. And BL (or "shounen ai" in Japanese) was originally just romance stories, the smutty version being yaoi. Nowadays many people do not make this distinction anymore. (The same goes for GL or shoujo ai and its smutty counterpart yuri, which -unlike BL- are not intended for a specific audience. GL is nothing new btw, just that more GL TV series are being made is a newer phenomenon.) (There is of course a separate manga genre by gay men for gay men called "bara".) Anyway, that's why in BL TV series, novels and mangas oftentimes most men are gay, nobody questions it, and the stories are just like any straight romance. Plus, the actors in BL series are usually straight, since they're supposed to appeal to a (straight) female audience. This is the case for most series categorized as "BL" coming from countries like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, though especially newer BL do seem to try to appeal to other audiences as well, addressing topics like women's rights, animal rights or other specific societal issues. (Why BL appeals to women so much is a whole thing, don't even get me started.) Meanwhile, Thai people call their male-male romance series "series Y" (for obvious reasons). A few of them are typical BL, while others have not only queer actors but also address queer issues like queer rights, coming out to the parents etc. and are written or at least directed by queer men. KinnPorsche does have quite a few classical BL elements, as the novel the series is based on was written by a (as far as I know straight) woman, the romance and the actors' looks are (imo) targeting straight women (which obviously does not mean they can't appeal to gay men), and our dear Thankhun ... well, not gonna spoil it for you. I'm definitely curious what you guys will think about the queer aspects and not-so-queer aspects of this series. So yeah, BL can undoubtedly appeal to (gay) men, just wanted to make it clear that BL is usually made by (straight) women with the main target audience specifically being (straight) women, so that the two of you know what you're watching and why some things are the way they are in KinnPorsche. There are upside and Downsides to Starting with KP. Upside is it adquestly preps you for the crackhead energy the BLs are riddled with and is a middle ground to start off. There are Low Budget-Great Story BL above them and High Budget-Low Story BLs below. Then there are the exquisite set of BLs that are just so extraordinarily beautiful that can't dare to talk Budget around them. So... Here is my suggestions. Although the industry is wildly dominated by Thai BLs. Do explore Taiwan, Japanese, Filipino and Korean BLs. Mainland China has some Bromance shows and low budget BLs but you REALLY need to be accustomed to reading between lines to appreciate them.
